People
Carlo C. Lazado is a senior scientist in fish health at the Fish Health Department at Nofima.
His research interests address the basic and applied aspects of fish health with a strong focus on the physiology and immunology of mucosal barriers. The mucosal surfaces (i.e., gills, skin, gut, and olfactory organ) are considered the first line of defence and the living sensors of fish; hence, they are excellent models to unravel how fish respond and adapt to their environment.
He investigates the intricacies of the physical and biological barriers (i.e., cells, molecules) at the mucosa, as well as how these barriers are regulated by the environment (e.g., light, handling, nutrition, treatment, infection, water quality), which is highly relevant in fish farming. This information will be valuable to develop more optimised and ecologically sound husbandry protocols. He received the 2021 3R Prize for Animal Research (shared with Elisabeth Ytteborg) from Norecopa, Norway's National Consensus Platform for the advancement of "the 3 Rs" (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) in connection with animal experiments.
Chris Noble is a senior scientist within the Production Biology department of Nofima. The majority of his research focuses on fish welfare in commercial aquacultural production, primarily the development and application of Operational Welfare Indicators (OWIs) for different species, routines and existing and emerging rearing systems. He is also very interested in the opportunities that digitalisation can offer in terms of monitoring fish welfare in both the lab and out on the farm.
Chris has over 20 years experience in aquaculture research. Following a BSc in Marine Biology at the University of Liverpool and a PhD in farmed Atlantic salmon feeding management at the University of Glasgow, UK, he held post-doctoral positions at the University of Glasgow, UK and at the Teikyo University of Science and Technology in Japan. He has taught courses on fish welfare at the University of Tromsø since 2015 and chair the board of Norecopa – Norway’s National Consensus Platform for the advancement of “the 3 Rs” (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). Since 2013 he has also been a Contributing Editor to the journal Aquaculture Environment Interactions, and since 2023 a Section Editor for aquatic animals at the journal Animal Welfare.
